What Size HVAC System Do I Need?

March 20, 2020
BY CODY WILBURN

It can be difficult to know what size HVAC unit your home requires. An HVAC size that is too small will not provide sufficient heat or air conditioning throughout your home. In contrast, an HVAC system that is too large will not only waste money but will also cause other issues in how the unit operates.

Because there are so many factors to consider when installing a new HVAC system in your home, it is important to work with an HVAC company you can trust. At Air Care Systems, we’ve been installing and repairing HVAC units for almost 15 years. We know how important it is to install an HVAC system that is both effective and efficient. Here are a few of the issues that can occur when your HVAC system is too large for your home:

The AC System Short Cycles

One way you can find out if your AC system is too large for your home is if the system regularly short cycles. To determine if you are facing this issue, simply time a cycle during a hot day when the AC is in use. An AC system that is working properly should cycle consistently throughout the day, keeping your home at a comfortable temperature. If your system runs for only a few minutes before shutting off, it may be too large for your home.

The Humidity is High Inside Your Home

High indoor humidity and short cycling go hand in hand. If your HVAC system is too large, it will run in short cycles throughout the day. However, it generally takes between 20 to 30 minutes to properly cool and dehumidify a home. If your AC is short cycling, it does not have ample time to work as it should.

The Temperature of Your Home is Uncomfortable

When your HVAC system is working properly, your home should be at a comfortable and consistent temperature. If the system is too large, it may have trouble regulating the temperature of your home. If one room is always too cold while another room is always too warm, your system may be too large.

The Electric Bill is High

This is one of the most common concerns from customers who have an HVAC system that is simply too large. When the AC is short cycling, it is using more energy than it should otherwise. This causes the electric bill to skyrocket, a good indication that your HVAC system is too large for your home.
